Steady Lee holds firm in Shenzhen

Korean Soomin Lee maintained his lead at the Shenzhen International, where the third round has been suspended overnight, but Englishman Callum Shinkwin had time before play was called to a halt to post a superb ten under 62 and reduce the margin at the top to two.

Lee, who held a three shot lead at the halfway point, has not made a bogey all week at Genzon Golf Club and a birdie at the second, accompanied by nine pars, moved the 22 year old to a 14 under total before being called off the course late in the day due to darkness.

Shinkwin, meanwhile, briefly threatening the magic number of 59 earlier in the day, negotiating the his first nine – the back nine – in 29 blows before coming home in 33 to climb 35 spots to second place and set the clubhouse target on 12 under.

South African Brandon Stone, who was three under through 12 holes, and Englishman Lee Slattery, who was two under through 12, were tied for third position on ten under par.

Player quotes

Soomin Lee

“I was a little bit nervous today but it turned out OK because I was chipping it well and I was making short putts so that kept me feeling confident.

“I was just trying to keep it bogey-free and not make any mistakes and that will be the same tomorrow – I will just try and hit the fairways and hit the greens and just focus on keeping bogeys off the card.

“This week is really helping my game and my confidence. When I played in Malaysia, I felt very nervous but if I have a chance towards the end tomorrow I think I will be better this time.”

Callum Shinkwin

“It was pretty good. To tell the truth, I missed a couple of putts as well but it was a great round. I drove the ball great, and on the par fives, I took advantage of the good tee shots.

“I played great the first two rounds. I was probably on the right side of the draw. I had a whole day off on Friday, so I was able to relax, lay down, watch a bit of TV and talk to people at home. I was able to do some practise in the late evening too – I was last man out on the range and putting green and that all kick-started today.

“If it finishes three rounds, I’ve done my best to get where I am, and good luck to whoever wins.”

Thorbjørn Olesen

“You know what’s funny, I didn’t actually feel like I was playing as good today as I was the first two rounds. I had some problems with my stomach also out there.

“But I got some good pills and that took me through it. I think 67 is a good score here. There’s a few tight tee shots out there, and you have to really be on your game, so I’m pretty happy.”
