La griega Eleni Christofi [12] eliminó en cerrada batalla de tres sets a la mexicana María Portillo Ramírez, en lo que fue para ella la primera ronda del US OPEN en fase calificatoria.

Si bien es cierto que María se llevó el primer parcial por 6-4, en los dos restantes los perdió al son de 6-2 y 7-5 .

Esta derrota es dolorosa porque realmente tuvo su chance de ganar.
