James Morrison will take a two shot lead into the final round of the BMW International Open in Germany as he chases a second European Tour title in as many months.
The in-form Englishman, who won last month’s Open de España, fired six birdies in a five under par round of 67 to move to 16 under par at Golfclub München Eichenried.
His only bogey of the day – and only his second in 54 holes – came on the closing hole, when his approach from the rough cut left over the grandstand and struck a female marshal on the arm. From another difficult lie, he then left his chip short and required two putts, but that was the only blemish in an otherwise impressive round.
Morrison will be joined in the final group by his compatriot Chris Paisley, who made his move with seven birdies in nine holes from the third hole, eventually signing for a six under par round of 66. The Qualifying School graduate climbed to 14 under par, with Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee a further shot back following a round of 68 which included an eagle on the sixth hole, as well as four birdies.
Former Ryder Cup player Peter Hanson continued his return from a back injury with three birdies in his last four holes for a round of 67. He sits four shots back on 12 under par, in fourth position.
Key player quotes
James Morrison – 67 (-16 total)
“The scoring has always been low here over the years, so you have just got to keep going low and keep making birdies and tried to do that and I did that. Tomorrow I’ll try to draw on Spain’s good vibes and see what happens.
“I’m not playing much different than I’ve done in the last probably year or so. But as you know, golf is a funny game, and the margins are so fine, and every part of my game is coming together and it’s coming together at the right time.”
Chris Paisley – 66 (-14 total)
“I’m obviously delighted. I’m proud of how I kind of kept moving forward. It’s the first time I’ve been in such a good position in a European Tour event. I didn’t get defensive. I didn’t start to worry about where I was. I just kept playing and trying to make birdies. I’m pretty proud of myself for doing that.”
Peter Hanson – 67 (-12 total)
“It’s great to be back. I missed the game so much last year and came out late this year as well. This is only my sixth or seventh event this year. It’s so nice to see the guys again and be back playing golf again. You don’t realise how much you miss it until you have to sit out.”
