THE MODERATOR: Obviously, not the way you want to win, but what did you take from today heading into the next round?
VICTORIA AZARENKA: Yeah, absolutely not. I mean, I felt like I played pretty clean, served quite well. Took my opportunities quite early in the match – kind of what I wanted to do. It’s unfortunate we couldn’t finish the match, and I hope Paula feels better, and the next time we play she’s healthy, fully healthy.
EL MODERADOR: Obviamente, no es la forma en que quieres ganar, pero ¿qué tomaste de hoy para pasar a la siguiente ronda?
VICTORIA AZARENKA: Sí, absolutamente no. Quiero decir, sentí que jugué bastante limpio, saqué bastante bien. Aproveché mis oportunidades bastante temprano en el partido, más o menos lo que quería hacer. Es lamentable que no hayamos podido terminar el partido, y espero que Paula se sienta mejor, y la próxima vez que juguemos esté sana, totalmente sana.
- You talked about Paula. She’s injured, but I know it’s always sad to be a partner and a girl that plays with you like a lot on the court. Do you think that just played one set today benefits you to the next round here in Guadalajara?
VICTORIA AZARENKA: I mean, I don’t know. We’ll have to see tomorrow, I guess. It’s definitely good I played the match in different conditions compared to my first match. The more match play I have, the better I think I can work on my game. I didn’t have that much play this year consistently, so the more matches I can have in a row is always going to be beneficial.
- Hablaste de Paula. Está lesionada, pero sé que siempre es triste ver una compañera y una chica que juega contigo mucho en la cancha. ¿Crees que solo jugar un set hoy te beneficia para la próxima ronda aquí en Guadalajara?
VICTORIA AZARENKA: Quiero decir, no lo sé. Habrá que ver mañana, supongo. Definitivamente es bueno que jugué el partido en diferentes condiciones en comparación con mi primer partido. Cuantos más partidos tenga, mejor creo que puedo trabajar en mi juego. No jugué tanto este año de manera consistente, por lo que cuantos más partidos pueda tener seguidos, siempre será beneficioso.
- Talking about tomorrow, you are going to face Madison Keys? What can you tell us about her?
VICTORIA AZARENKA: I feel like the fans are really great and supporting people who play good tennis. Obviously, you know, I feel a lot of support here that I’ve played quite a few times in Mexico. I have quite a few friends in Mexico, so that definitely helps to, I guess, get support here. But the crowd has been amazing. I wanted to experience that energy like I did today in the night match. Like, I heard a lot of great things in Guadalajara from last year from the Finals, that the energy was really great. That’s really what kind of motivates me the most to go out there and play, so that was really nice. Playing against Madison, she’s a great player. She’s played really well this year. She had really good results. We haven’t played in a while, so it’s going to be a good match for both of us. Not expecting too many rallies there. So we’ll see.
- Hablando de mañana, ¿te enfrentarás a Madison Keys? ¿Qué puedes contarnos sobre ella?
VICTORIA AZARENKA: Siento que los fanáticos son realmente geniales y apoyan a las jugadores que juegan buen tenis. Obviamente, ya sabes, siento mucho apoyo aquí porque he jugado bastantes veces en México. Tengo bastantes amigos en México, así que eso definitivamente ayuda, supongo, a obtener apoyo aquí. Pero los fans han sido increíble. Quería experimentar esa energía como lo hice hoy en el partido de la noche. Escuché muchas cosas buenas en Guadalajara del año pasado de las Finales, que la energía era realmente genial. Eso es realmente lo que más me motiva a salir y jugar, así que fue muy agradable. Jugando contra Madison, es una gran jugadora. Ha jugado muy bien este año. Tuvo muy buenos resultados. Hace tiempo que no jugamos, así que será un buen partido para los dos. No espero demasiados rallies, así que ya veremos.
- First of all, this is the first time that we have Guadalajara Open as a WTA 100. I want to know your opinion about the tournament.
VICTORIA AZARENKA: Honestly, I feel really that people are doing their best here and putting a Masters 1000 in two, three years. To put a big event is such a hard job, and they’re doing a really good job. Having such a great turnout with fans, it’s what I judge by the tournament how well they can promote the tournament, bring people in, and grow tennis. Definitely Mexico is the place where you can see that happening. So I hope the tournament stays here, and we can grow it more and more.
- En primer lugar, esta es la primera vez que tenemos el Guadalajara Open como un WTA 1000. Quiero saber tu opinión sobre el torneo.
VICTORIA AZARENKA: Honestamente, siento que la gente está dando lo mejor de sí aquí y lograron organizar un WTA 100 en dos o tres años. Organizar un gran evento es un trabajo muy duro, y lo están haciendo muy bien. Tener una participación tan grande con los fanáticos, es lo que juzgo en los torneos, qué tan bien pueden promover el torneo, atraer gente y hacer crecer el tenis. Definitivamente México es el lugar donde puedes ver que eso sucede. Así que espero que el torneo se quede aquí y podamos hacerlo crecer más y más.
- Now, how do you feel about the weather, the altitude?
VICTORIA AZARENKA: I’m not a fan of altitude. I have asthma, so it’s not easy. But after a few days, it’s just easier to accustom. We play in different conditions all over the world, so it’s just one week with different conditions here.
- Ahora, ¿cómo te sientes acerca del clima, la altitud?
VICTORIA AZARENKA: No soy fan de la altura. Tengo asma, así que no es fácil. Pero después de unos días, es más fácil acostumbrarse. Jugamos en diferentes condiciones en todo el mundo, por lo que es solo una semana con diferentes condiciones aquí.
- What do you think about the Mexico fans?
VICTORIA AZARENKA: I have a great opinion. I have such love here. Walking on the court and hearing the whole stadium roar, it’s amazing. It’s all you can ask for.
- ¿Qué piensas de la afición de México?
VICTORIA AZARENKA: Tengo una gran opinión. Tengo tanto amor aquí. Caminar por la cancha y escuchar rugir todo el estadio, es increíble. Es todo lo que puedes pedir.
