Torrance eyes historic hat-trick at Mottram Hall

Two-time ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Champion Sam Torrance has targeted a “milestone victory” when the 57th edition of the £260,000 event is held at De Vere Mottram Hall from June 6-9.

Torrance’s first victory in the event came in 2005, and he successfully defended his title the following year en route to lifting the John Jacobs Trophy for the second successive season.

As well as the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship, the 2002 Ryder Cup-winning Captain has also won the Bendinat London Seniors Masters on two occasions – in 2005 and 2007 – but the 11-time European Senior Tour champion is yet to run up a hat-trick of titles in his illustrious career.

The 59 year old is hoping to achieve that feat at the stunning De Vere Mottram Hall in Cheshire, England, which will be hosting the tournament for the first time this year.

Torrance said: “The PGA Seniors Championship is one of the biggest events on the Senior Tour and one I always look forward to – and especially so this year as it’s the first regular tournament on the schedule.

“To win the same tournament three times would be a first for me on the Senior Tour, so it would be a nice milestone in my career. I’ve played Mottram Hall a couple of times and have always enjoyed the course, so it’s all set up nicely for another great week.”

De Vere Mottram Hall’s Championship course, designed by renowned architect Dave Thomas, is set in 270 acres of Cheshire’s rolling parkland.

The main features of the demanding 7,006 yards, par 72 layout, which is set against the backdrop of the imposing 18th Century Hall, are the oak and beech trees lining the pristine fairways and the tricky, well-guarded greens.

The signature hole is the ultra-demanding par four 17th, which features a water hazard on the right, thick rough on the left and a stream cutting across the fairway.

As part of the venue’s recent £6million refurbishment, the clubhouse, Claret Jug restaurant, pro shop and halfway house have all been upgraded.

Advance tickets for the tournament are currently available at a discounted rate, priced £10 for any one day ticket (a saving of £5 on the gate price) and £25 for a season ticket (a saving of £10 on the gate price). Customers booking in advance will also receive a free programme and drawsheet.
